Intrinsic Properties/Putnam: problem: if they are rejected, then there is no external thing or event specifically, essentially or intrinsically connected to any relationship that it may have to other things (our thoughts included). So reference becomes an occult phenomenon.

Intrinsic Explanation/Putnam: if there were intrinsic statements within the world, the world would be like a ghost. Then materialism cannot be true.
