Sense/reference/Dummett: in the case of complex expressions one must know more than what is designated by the expression. Cf. >Compositionality.

Complex/Dummett: A thought cannot be grasped in any other way than as a complex. Reason:
"General condition"/Evans: no one can have the thought "This rose smells sweet" who is unable to have other thoughts with regard to this rose or is not clear about what is sweet-smelling.
Dummett: In addition, he must grasp the complexity: he must have a concept of how he himself thinks about this rose, thinking something that may also apply to other things. Cf. >Semantic value/Dummett.
