Representation/Black: there must be representations, because the Pavlovian dog does not chew the bell. It reacts as if the food is present.

Ogden/Richards: The look at the match that has just been torn gives one the impression that a flame is about to be lit. An "engram" is assumed in the brain.
Black: this corresponds most closely to a "memory trace". But this is only postulated.
