Rorty I 158 ff
Perception/Locke: (according to Rorty): took the sensory impressions to be self-explanatory. Something can impress the mind, though the mind does not perceive it.
Recognizing is going, so to speak entirely through the eye from which the dented (sic) board is observed, not by the board itself.
>Recognition, >Sensory impression, >Reason/Locke.
Since impressions for Locke were representations, he needed a judgment. The representations were judged, not simply had.
>Judgment, >Order.

Arndt II 184
Perception/Locke/Arndt: first of all it brings us our own and the external reality to consciousness.
Reference: reference is achievable only by perception.
>Reality/Locke, >Consciousness/Locke.
Perception only provides simple ideas.
The mind delivers new (complex) ideas by comparison and abstraction from others.
