Jonathan Glover on Ethics - Dictionary of Arguments
Singer I 234 Ethics/Glover: (J. Glover (1975)(1)): Thesis: Ignoring unmeasurable damage misleads us. For example, a village with a hundred inhabitants who each eat one hundred beans is attacked by a hundred hungry bandits. Each bandit grabs a bowl of beans and empties it. A week later, they plan to repeat the same thing, but - plagued by guilt - each of them is to take only one bean from each bowl, so that no perceptible harm is done to the individual. In the end, however, every inhabitant of the village is equally poorer by one hundred beans, and the responsibility is only apparently diminished. >Climate change/Singer, P., >Climate change, >Statistics, >Distribution Function, >Causation, >Climate Damage, >Responsibility. 1.
