Analytic/synthetic: achieved by decomposition or by composition. In philosophy analytically true = true according to the meaning of the components - synthetic insight = substantial expansion of knowledge.

E.g. Although "rational animal" and "featherless bipeds" should be coextensive, as they say, for fairly obscure reasons. "All human beings are rational creatures" is Analytic. But "All human beings are featherless bipeds" is regarded as synthetic. (analytic / synthetic).
