Maxwell’s Demon - Philosophy Dictionary of Arguments

Maxwell's Demon: Thought experiment by J. C. Maxwell, in which an instance (the "demon") causes molecules in a container that move rapidly to be separated from slower molecules. If this were possible, it would create order and do work. If no energy were needed, the second law of thermodynamics would be violated. The discussion unfolds around the physical possibility or impossibility of such an instance. See also Entropy, Energy.
