Milton Friedman on Democracy - Dictionary of Arguments

Brocker I 404
Democracy/Friedman: a democratically elected government is (...) not an arbitrator, but always also an expression of the balance of power within society and on the markets. It is no coincidence that Hayek has always maintained an ambivalent relationship with democracy and preferred liberal dictators to populist democratic governments (1). Hayek and Friedman served as economic advisors to the military authorities in the 1970s after the coup d'état in Chile. Apparently they saw here an opportunity to realize the liberal market model "from above".
