Milton Friedman on Liberty - Dictionary of Arguments

Brocker I 401
Liberty/Friedman: there are relations between political and economic liberty in both directions. Historically, the opening of markets often had to be fought over and won against the authorities. However, an existing market system is the necessary, if not sufficient, precondition for political freedom. Friedman justifies this primarily with private property and an interest in making private profits.(1)
