Stagflation: Stagflation characterizes an economic condition marked by simultaneous high inflation and stagnant economic growth, coupled with high unemployment. This unique scenario challenges traditional economic theories where inflation tends to occur alongside robust economic growth. Stagflation poses policy dilemmas as measures to tackle inflation might exacerbate unemployment, making it a complex economic challenge to address. Milton Friedman on Stagflation - Dictionary of Arguments

Mause I 57
Stagflation/Friedman: after initial economic policy successes in the 1950s and 1960s, doubts grew about Keynesian macroeconomics (see Economic Policy/Keynesianism), when unemployment and inflation ("stagflation") occurred simultaneously since the early 1970s. Criticism came above all from the monetarists, whose most famous representative was Milton Friedman (1912 - 2006). At the heart of their analysis is monetary policy, which they believe can only have short-term effects but is neutral in the long term.
