Gaus I 418 Impartiality/Barry/Weinstein: Like Rawls and Scanlon, Barry's debts to Sidgwick are palpable, stemming no doubt from his complex engagement with utilitarianism. For Barry, as for Scanlon, justice as impartiality is merely a 'device for focusing our thoughts' about justice. It simply helps us in 'thinking for ourselves in a more structured way' (1998(1): 194-5).
