Brian Barry on Democratic Theory - Dictionary of Arguments
Mause I 64 Democratic Theory/Barry: International democracy theory has been shaped for almost three decades by two books written by economists: Capitalism, Socialism, and Democracy by Joseph A. Schumpeter (1942) (1) and An Economic Theory of Democracy by Anthony Downs (1957 (2). In the history of theory there are only a few works on economic democracy theory (cf. however the works of Brian Barry 1970) (3). The idea that both parties and voters are benefit maximizing and democracy has no intrinsic value is one of the central assumptions of (almost) all rational-choice-inspired democracy theories and election analyses. 1.
