Richard Thaler on Subsidiarity - Dictionary of Arguments

Mause I 177
Subsidiarity/Thaler/Sunstein: one way to more subsidiarity is the liberal paternalism by Thaler and Sunstein. (1)(2)
Problem: an apparent contradiction between paternalism (state correction) and liberalism (consumer sovereignty).
Sunstein/Thaler Thesis: It is a mistake to assume that people have always chosen the most preferred alternative; rather, as empirical research in behavioural economics has shown, their choice can be easily influenced by the so-called "framing" of their decision-making situation, by "anchoring" or self-management problems (see in detail Kahneman (3)); a choice according to the standard economic theory of the benefit of expectation is therefore by no means the rule.
