Karl Kautsky on Consciousness - Dictionary of Arguments

Brocker I 37
Consciousness/Socialism/Class Struggle/Kautsky: Lenin's fundamental argument is based on Kautsky's statement that "socialist consciousness [...] is something "brought into the class struggle of the proletariat from the outside, not something originated from it" (quoted from (1). In this context Lenin also refers with Kautsky's words to the fact that the teaching of socialism originated in the bourgeois intelligentsia - and not primordially in the proletariat - and as a result consciousness is carried into the working class by the intelligentsia.
