Frantz Fanon on Culture - Dictionary of Arguments
Brocker I 390 Culture/Fanon: In his speech to the Second Congress of Black Writers and Artists in Rome in 1959, entitled "On National Culture", Fanon makes it clear that and to what extent he understands nationalism, for which he pleads, as a political phenomenon that transcends the particular (for example ethnic or religious) cultural structure without negating it. In this way, he uses the term in a different sense than that which is common in Europe when a homogeneous nation or even a national dominant culture is invoked. FanonVsNégritude/FanonVsCésaire/FanonVsCulturalism: The movement of Négritude (or culturalism) was primarily concerned with an affirmative reference to aspects of black culture - and thus to something whose existence colonialism had either flatly denied or massively devalued. He considers these projects a political impasse. (1) For the alleged link is that of a cultural community. However, Fanon does not think that this is the case. Def National Culture/Fanon: is for Fanon "the totality of the efforts that people make in the spiritual sphere to describe, justify and sing about the action in which it has founded and asserted itself" (2).
