Gaus I 283 Public Sphere/Pateman/Mottier: Pateman argues that it is important to reconceptualize the division between the private and the public sphere and to raise questions about the implications of that division for democratic theory. >Privacy/Pateman. In her view, it is impossible to democratize the public sphere whether through equality of chances as promoted by liberalism or through participative citizenship which includes all citizens — without a radical transformation of the links between men and women in the private sphere.
