Russell, ABC of Relativity II 138 Measuring/Russell: always contains an element of convention - E.g. size of an electron: we always have to make two comparisons: 1) between an electron at different times 2) two electrons at the same time. Absurd: to assume that all the electrons were bigger or smaller in a different area. That would also affect the measuring device - therefore it would not be detectable. Size of an electron: is therefore a convention. In contrast, the mass of an electron is not a convention! Because we can compare the effects of two electrons on a third one - if it is the same under the same circumstances, we can infer equality of mass which is not based on convention.
