D’Alembert on Historiography - Dictionary of Arguments

Gadamer I 28
Historiography/truth/probability/d'Alembert/Gadamer: D'Alembert(1) rightly writes: Probability occurs primarily in historical facts, and generally in all past, present and future events that we attribute to some sort of coincidence because we do not unravel the causes. That part of this knowledge which objects to the present and the past, even though it is based on mere testimony, often generates in us a conviction as strong as that which is born of axioms.
