al-Farabi on Recognition - Dictionary of Arguments

Höffe I 125
Recognition/al-Farabi/Höffe: Decisive for al-Fārābī, for its epistemological relationship between philosophy and revelation and for a punch line of political philosophy, the philosopher-prophet rule, is a theory of the active mind or active intellect. This one, who enables all human beings to the insights essential to them, is also responsible for the higher levels of knowledge, for revelation and finally for philosophy. But since only philosophy uses exclusively the rational part of the soul, it is considered superior to revelation.
Revelation: This requires, in fact, what philosophy does not need, a capacity that is located between reason and sensuality, the imagination, which reaches its highest level in the visions of prophets(1).
