Otfried Höffe on Manichaeism - Dictionary of Arguments

Höffe I 97
Manichaeism/Höffe: The religious community founded by Mani (215/16-277), which combines Christian with Persian and Buddhist elements, is based on a sharp dualism of light and darkness in the sense of good and evil.
Similar to the ascent within Plato's allegory of the cave, the path from darkness to light finally leads to salvation. Through a successful world mission this religion finds followers from Spain to China, far beyond the borders of the Roman Empire.
