al-Mawardi on Governance - Dictionary of Arguments
Höffe I 131 Governance/State/al-Mawardi/Höffe: the caliph, in personal union also imam, i.e. religious leader, [must] fulfil seven conditions. Apart from mental and physical health, these include knowledge of the (Islamic) religion. Quraish/Abbasid/al-Mawardi: In addition, there is an ethnic precondition with which al-Mawardi takes sides in the political dispute of his time. For only the Abbasid caliphate, not his two rivals, fulfils the precondition. He demands descent from the Arab tribe of the Prophet Mohammed, the Quraish. Disobedience: Al-MawardiVs Democracy: Politically no less important is the tacit rejection of any right of resistance and any right to a possible tyrannicide: Once installed by the oath of allegiance and submission, the ruler can never be deposed. Being solely responsible to God, he can also only be punished by God. >Islam, >Tyranny, >Democracy._____________Explanation of symbols: Roman numerals indicate the source, arabic numerals indicate the page number.
