Nature, philosophy: nature is usually defined as the part of reality that was not made or designed by humans. No properties can be attributed to nature. E.g. since contradiction is ultimately a language problem, one can say that nature cannot be contradictory. Not all forms of necessity can be attributed to nature, e.g. non-logical necessity and unnecessary existence. See also de re, de dicto, necessity de re, existence._____________Annotation: The above characterizations of concepts are neither definitions nor exhausting presentations of problems related to them. Instead, they are intended to give a short introduction to the contributions below. – Lexicon of Arguments. | |||

Thomas Hobbes on Nature - Dictionary of Arguments
Adorno XIII 246 Nature/Matter/Hobbes/Adorno: matter should be neither a body nor something particular opposed to the bodies. This may be reminiscent of the theses derived from ancient natural speculation, of matter or substance as the true or actual being. But the interpretation given by Hobbes to this conception of matter, separated from the individual bodies, exactly reverses the ancient idea. >Matter, >Body. XIII 247 Hobbes was an extreme nominalist. Matter should also be a mere name, while the real, the individual... XIII 248 ...bodies are to be the individual physical things, which are grouped together under the concept of matter. Corpuscular theory/Hobbes/Adorno: the models of the true being are not the atoms, but corpuscles, in connection with his empirical and anti-speculative direction. >Nominalism, >Corpuscular theory, >Atoms, >Democritus._____________Explanation of symbols: Roman numerals indicate the source, arabic numerals indicate the page number.
