Baruch Spinoza on Politics - Dictionary of Arguments

Höffe I 232
Politics/Spinoza/Höffe: Although there is no political philosophy in ethics - it is only hinted at in two concise references in Theorem 37(1) - Spinoza's basic idea has an eminently political meaning.
Without having to say it, religious and state regulations are replaced by a philosophically founded insight, a knowledge.
Spinoza thus opposes every form of life that is authoritatively prescribed from the outside, whether stemming from Judaism or from the strict Calvinism that was dominant in the Netherlands at the time. It is replaced by a life that comes from within, not from the passive affects of desire, joy and sorrow, but from the active affect of bravery (fortitudo) - in the sense of strength of character.
>Governance, >State (Polity), >Judaism, >Calvinism.
