Charles Taylor on Society - Dictionary of Arguments

Society/Charles Taylor: the term can be narrowed or broadened(1): according to its origin from the semantic need for registration of the newly created social sphere of order, 'civil society' could either be identified with the market economy (Luhmann(2)(3)) or, in a broader sense, include pre-state institutions and culture, especially the political public and non-commercial structures of civil organisation and self-government, for whose naming the concept of civil society became popular at the end of the 20th century.
