How mean people behave towards each other on the internet depends on the degree of anonymity.
>Social networks
, >Social media.

Anonymity/Lanier: certainly has its place, but it requires careful design. A substantial exchange of views requires full presence. It is therefore one of the fundamental rights of an accused person to be allowed to face his prosecutor.

Before the World Wide Web, there were two types of online connections. One was Usenet, which usually required a connection to universities or the military, so that the Usenet population consisted mainly of educated adults. It would have been easy to design a non-anonymous system (for the Internet) at that time. If this had happened at that time, today's websites might not have the design aesthetics of incidental anonymity.
