Information, information theory: A character or a character combination contains information when it is clear to the recipient that this character or the character combination appears instead of another possible character or a possible character combination. The supply of possible characters determines to a part the probability of the occurrence of a character from this supply. In addition, the expected probability of the appearance of a character can be increased by already experienced experiences of regularities. The amount of information transmitted by a character depends on the improbability of the occurrence of the character._____________Annotation: The above characterizations of concepts are neither definitions nor exhausting presentations of problems related to them. Instead, they are intended to give a short introduction to the contributions below. – Lexicon of Arguments. | |||

Umberto Eco on Information - Dictionary of Arguments
I 132 Probability/information/meaning/Eco: the probability within a message is determined by the recipient. (i.e. by previous knowledge). This means that there is a transaction relationship. Therefore, if you want to examine the importance of communication, you cannot ignore the recipient. I 139 Value: (of an information): value only appears with regard to the response of a recipient and is only organized here to form a meaning. I 144 Markoff Chain: with the Markoff Chain the uncertainty decreases with progression. The composer is therefore forced to consciously incorporate new uncertainties at every step. I 148 Expectation/information/Eco: the reception of a messenger structured in an open way leads to the expectation implying less a foreseeing of the expected than an expectation of the unforeseen. I 184 Definition first information: from the totality of the signs, the greatest possible number of imaginative impulses (suggestions) was taken. This is the value that the open work of art consciously pursues, while the classical forms want to restrict it as a necessary condition within certain limits. I 185 Definition second information: second information ist the reference between the first information and the organic qualities recognized as its origin. It is the pleasant awareness of the fact that one enjoys the result of a conscious organization, an intention. >Expectation, >Probability, >Communication, >Artworks._____________Explanation of symbols: Roman numerals indicate the source, arabic numerals indicate the page number.
