David Weinberger on Theories - Dictionary of Arguments

Morozov I 265
Theories/Knowledge/Weinberger/Morozov: for Weinberger, the assertion that 75% of people who like ((s) the TV series) "Mad Men" also like "Breaking Bad" is revolutionary because it is "theory-free", unlike Darwin's theory of evolution.(1)
>Statistics
, >Causality, >Causal relation, >Correlation, >Theories, >Knowledge.
MorozovVsWeinberger: such "theory-free" knowledge has a long tradition: market research, census, surveys; people fill in questionnaires, now online as well - but is that revolutionary? Is that the kind of knowledge that cures cancer?
Weinberger may be right that there is no hypothesis here, but there is no presumption at all.
>Hypotheses.
