J.-J. Rousseau: Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712 – 1778) was a Swiss-born philosopher, writer, and composer. He is best known for his influential works on political philosophy, such as The Social Contract (1762), and for his novel Émile, or On Education (1762). Rousseau's writings had a profound impact on the French Revolution and on the development of modern political thought.
