Behaviorism on Measurements - Dictionary of Arguments

Slater I 30
Measurement/fear/anxiety/Behaviorism: features, Watson and Rayner (1920)(1) can be criticized for a lack of objective measurement of the responses of Albert (>Experiment/Watson
) to the various stimuli.
Although their notes are useful and informative, they are likely subjective and qualitative in scope. By today’s standards, one might anticipate the development of a behavioral coding system and the rating of the observed behaviors by two or more judges leading to reliable estimates of the variables under consideration.
The reliability and the validity of the coding system would need to be ascertained and an “evidence-based” approach enlisted (see Silverman & Ollendick, 2005(2), for a discussion of evidence-based assessment strategies for the measurement of fear and anxiety).
