Henri Tajfel on Psychological Needs - Dictionary of Arguments
Haslam I 225 Psychological needs/social psychology/group psychology/Tajfel: Tajfel and Turner (1979)(1) (…) proposed that a person’s need for positive identity may be satisfied by membership in prestigious social groups. The basic human drive here is for self-esteem ‒ the desire to feel good about ourselves. One way to achieve this end is to join social groups that are socially valued; another is to increase the perceived worth of the social groups to which one already belongs. To the extent that people are motivated to regard themselves positively, they will also be motivated to differentiate themselves from outsiders by perceiving as much difference as possible between their ingroup and those groups to which they do not belong. >Group cohesion, >Group behavior, >Behavior, >Social behavior, >Social identity, >Priorities, >Self-esteem, >Self-description. 1.
