Nonfactualism: Nonfactualism is an expression for the assumption that there are no facts with regard to certain decision-making processes. For example, there is no fact that causes the sum of two and two to be four. Nonfactualism is interpreted very differently by different authors. Therefore, the expression is sometimes used polemically. See also truth makers, decidability, facts, truth, deflationism._____________Annotation: The above characterizations of concepts are neither definitions nor exhausting presentations of problems related to them. Instead, they are intended to give a short introduction to the contributions below. – Lexicon of Arguments. | |||

W.V.O. Quine on Nonfactualism - Dictionary of Arguments
ad XII 55 Nonfactualism/Not a fact/(s): no (significant) fact exists, e.g. with questions that are in principle undetermined - or whose response depends on the further illustration of the problem -> Inscrutability of reference. --- ad XII 64 Nonfactualism/(s): if something is fundamentally indeterminate, there is no fact to explore. - Quine: e.g. if meaning is a property of the behavior, the inscrutability of reference cannot be in the inscrutability of a fact - because there is nothing to investigate - but it probably makes a difference whether one refers to rabbits or parts - or e.g. to formulas or Gödel numbers - because then there would be no difference between them - the reference would lose its meaning - but the difference is tangible neither through behavior nor through ostension. -> Indeterminacy: - formulas: have different properties than numbers._____________Explanation of symbols: Roman numerals indicate the source, arabic numerals indicate the page number.
