Paul Ricoeur on Beliefs - Dictionary of Arguments
I 41 Faith/believing/beliefs/Ricoeur: The opposite of doubt is, roughly speaking, faith. (...) the faith of the hermeneutician, the faith that has passed through criticism, the post-critical faith. I look for it in the succession of the philosophical decisions that secretly stimulate a phenomenology of religion and that are hidden up to its apparent neutrality. It is a reasonable faith because it interprets (>Interpretation/Ricoeur), but it is faith because it seeks a second naivety through interpretation. For [the belief], phenomenology is the instrument of listening, of collecting, of restoring meaning. Faith in order to understand, and understanding in order to believe - that is his maxim, and his maxim, that is the "hermeneutic circle" of faith and understanding itself. >Religious Belief/Ricoeur._____________Explanation of symbols: Roman numerals indicate the source, arabic numerals indicate the page number.
