Sense Data Theory: The sense data theory holds that when we perceive an object, we are directly aware of a mental representation of the object called a sense datum. Sense data are supposed to be private and subjective, and they are not identical to the objects that they represent. See also Perception, Knowledge, Experience, Seeing, Qualia, Qualities, World/Thinking, Stimuli, Proximal theory, Distal theory._____________Annotation: The above characterizations of concepts are neither definitions nor exhausting presentations of problems related to them. Hilary Putnam on Sense Data Theory - Dictionary of Arguments
I (d) 119 Sense-Data/Putnam: similarity relations between sense data are not present to the mind, e.g. "as" is not a similarity relationship. Past sense data are mere formal constructs. > Loewenheim sentence: these sentences are interpreted differently in different models. Putnam: that also infects the current sense data. I (e) 133 Sense Data/Russell: even features are then >universals. Logical Proper Names/Russell: "this": is the name of sense data. >Logical Proper Names. I (g) 174 Moore/Russell: sense data are mind-independent (PutnamVs)._____________Explanation of symbols: Roman numerals indicate the source, arabic numerals indicate the page number.
