Doxa: doxa (Greek δόξα) means "opinion" or "belief." In philosophy, doxa is often used to refer to common sense or popular opinion, as opposed to episteme (Greek ἐπιστήμη), which refers to knowledge or understanding. Doxa is often seen as being less reliable than episteme, because it is based on personal experience and interpretation rather than on rigorous evidence and reasoning. See also Epistemology, Knowledge, Argumentation, Understanding._____________Annotation: The above characterizations of concepts are neither definitions nor exhausting presentations of problems related to them. Plato on Doxa - Dictionary of Arguments
Gadamer I 371 Doxa/Plato/Gadamer: Plato shows us in his unforgettable portrayals what the difficulty is to know what one does not know. It is the power of opinion against which the admission of not knowing is so difficult to achieve. Opinion is that which holds down the questions. They exhibit a peculiar tendency to spread. It always wants to be the general opinion, as the word the Greeks have for opinion, doxa, also means the decision to which the general public rises Gadamer I 372 in the council. How can it even lead to not knowing and to questioning? >Question/Gadamer, >Knowledge/Gadamer._____________Explanation of symbols: Roman numerals indicate the source, arabic numerals indicate the page number.
