Baruch Spinoza on Pain - Dictionary of Arguments
Adorno XIII 227 Pain/Materialism/Spinoza/Adorno: the philosophy of Spinoza has been much more materialistic than its reception by Schelling and Goethe would make us believe. But for him, the price is paid for the pleasure principle being sacrificed to what is called the principle of ego according to a Freudian expression. Because pleasure and pain, on the other hand, presuppose the preservation of the self which is identical with itself, which is self-peservering, the pleasure principle is restricted by this ego principle. >Freud, >Suffering, >Materialism, >F.W.J. Schelling, >I, Ego, Self, >I, Ego, Self/Freud._____________Explanation of symbols: Roman numerals indicate the source, arabic numerals indicate the page number.
