Augustine on Philosophy - Dictionary of Arguments

Höffe I 101
Philosophy/Augustinus/Höffe: Older church teachers like Tertullian still polemic against philosophy. Augustine takes up basic ideas of "pagan" philosophy with the aim to make it an inner component of Christian teaching. With this goal philosophy could remain dominant or be considered equal to Christianity.
Augustine decides on a third, by no means middle way. In all essential questions he does not allow an answer that can be reached only by reason, but rather declares that the teachings indispensable for a Christian always have priority.
