Word: a structure separated by spaces from other words within a language. In general, words are formed by one or more characters which are attached to one another. Whole words can in turn be interpreted as signs. In human languages, the elements of the words are letters; in computer languages, other symbols are used within words. Augustine on Words - Dictionary of Arguments

Gadamer I 424
Word/Augustine/Gadamer: The external word, and with it the whole problem of the multiplicity of languages, is already expressly devalued by Augustine - who after all still discusses it(1). The external word, just as the external word reproduced only internally, is bound to a certain tongue (lingua). The fact that the "verbum" is said differently in each language only means, however, that it cannot show itself in its true being to the human tongue.
Augustine says in a completely platonic devaluation of the sensual appearance: non dicitur, sicuti est, sed sicut potest videri audirive per corpus. The word, verbum cordis, is completely independent of such appearance. It is neither prolativum nor cogitativum in similitudine soni.
Thus this inner word is the mirror and the image of the divine word.
Gadamer: When Augustine and scholasticism deal with the problem of "verbum" in order to obtain the conceptual means for the mystery of the >Trinity
, it is exclusively this inner word, the word of the heart and its relationship with the intelligentia that they make the subject of their work. >Language/Christianity.

Ripanti has shown in an excellent study that in "De doctrina christiana" the basic features of a hermeneutics of the Bible are found, which is not a methodological doctrine of theology, but describes the way of experience of Bible reading. See G. Ripanti, Agostino teoretico dell' interpretazione, Brescia 1980).
