Giambattista Vico on Humanities - Dictionary of Arguments
Gadamer I 29 Humanities/Humanism/Rhetoric/Vico/Gadamer: Vico's recourse to the Roman concept of >sensus communis and his defence of humanistic rhetoric against modern science is of particular interest to us. Here we are introduced to a moment of truth in the humanities which was no longer accessible to the self-contemplation of the humanities in the 19th century. Vico lived in an unbroken tradition of rhetorical-humanistic education and only needed to reassert its unaltered law. After all, there has always been a knowledge that the possibilities of rational proof and teaching do not fully exhaust the circle of knowledge. Vico's appeal to the sensus communis belongs (...) to a broad context that goes back to antiquity (...)(1). >Sensus communis/Gadamer. 1. Offenbar hat Castiglione eine wichtige Rolle bei der Vermittlung dieses aristotelischen Motivs gespielt, vgl. Erich Loos: Baldassare Castigliones Libro del cortegiano (Analecta romanica, hrsg. v. F. Schalk, H. 2)._____________Explanation of symbols: Roman numerals indicate the source, arabic numerals indicate the page number. The corresponding books are indicated on the right hand side.
