Expectations: in psychology, expectations are cognitive anticipations about future events or outcomes, influencing perception and behavior. They shape individual experiences by guiding attention, interpretation, and emotional responses. Expectations can be formed through past experiences, social influences, and cognitive processes, impacting decision-making and overall well-being. Hans-Georg Gadamer on Expectations - Dictionary of Arguments
I 272 Expectation/Understanding/Hermeneutics/Gadamer: The fact that someone who speaks the same language understands the words he or she uses in a familiar sense like me is a general prerequisite that can only be questioned in individual cases - and the same applies in the case of the foreign language that we think we know in an average way and presuppose this average use of language when understanding a text. What is true of the pre-opinion of language use is no less true of the pre-opinion of content with which we read texts and I 273 that make up our pre-understanding. >Understanding, >Prior knowledge, >Hermeneutics. The question here is just as much how one is to find one's way out of the spell of one's own pre-opinions. Certainly it cannot be a general prerequisite that what we are told in a text fits in seamlessly with my own opinions and expectations. Cf. Philosophical theories about the >Principle of charity, >Hermeneutic Circle/Heidegger._____________Explanation of symbols: Roman numerals indicate the source, arabic numerals indicate the page number.
