Wilhelm von Humboldt on Education - Dictionary of Arguments
Gadamer I 16 Education/"Bildung"/Humboldt/Gadamer: (...) Wilhelm von Humboldt (...) with the fine ear that distinguishes him, already senses a difference in meaning between culture and education: "But when we say education in our language, we mean something both higher and more inward, namely the kind of sense that flows harmoniously from the knowledge and feelings of the entire intellectual and moral striving to the sensation and character"(1). Gadamer: Education here means more than culture, that is, the formation of abilities or talents. Rather, the rise of the word education awakens the ancient mystical tradition according to which man carries in his soul the image of God according to which he was created, and has to build it up in himself. The Latin equivalent of education is "formatio" (...). >Education/Gadamer, >Education/Hegel. 1. Wilhelm v. Humboldt, Gesammelte Schriften, Akademie-Ausgabe, Bd.
