Charles Lyell on Geology - Dictionary of Arguments
Gould I 138 Geology/Charles Lyell/Gould: Lyell's thesis: the great animals of prehistoric times return and will delight the earth again with their presence. Lyell believes that the earth has "recovered" from the first shocks of its formation and has remained more or less the same. He took the view that there were no global disasters and no steady progress that would have led to any higher states. I 139 Thesis: there is a cycle of the running back in itself alternation between dinosaurs and mammals, a "big year", corresponding to global climate cycles. No development on a stepladder towards perfection. (1) I 140 Lyell made an exception in the idea of completely uniform development: the homo sapiens. (2) With this he has actually struck his own system a blow, which he tried to attenuate by assuming that this discontinuity reflects only one event in the moral realm. GouldVsLyell: Lyell is a typical example of the tendency of many researchers to erect a fence around their own area: "To here and no further". 1.
