Albert O. Hirschman on Terminology - Dictionary of Arguments
Brocker I 520 Terminology/Hirschman: "exit": means the termination of the relationship with an organization: the product of a company is no longer purchased, membership in a party is terminated, the company leaves the country. Conflict ("voice"): the attempt to draw the attention of organisations to contradictions in order to resolve them. (1) For the Conflict/Emigration Ratio, see Markets/Hirschman. Brocker I 522 Migration: clearly impersonal indirect. Conflict: the opposite of emigration: less clear demarcation, direct, articulating grievances. Brocker I 526 Loyalty/Hirschman: a kind of psychological cost of emigration that strengthens the option of opposition to emigration (2). It postpones emigration and then makes it more difficult to return by requiring a greater improvement in quality. (3) Modernly spoken, loyalty leads to hysteria in behavior. 1. Albert O.
