Dennis L. Meadows on Utopia - Dictionary of Arguments
Brocker I 556 Utopia/Limits of Growth/Meadows: as a solution to the problem of collapse through exponential growth (see Model/Meadows), Meadows' team introduced a global balance(1): growth constraints were built into the model: the computer model steered towards a global balance when skillful use of technologies could be improved to an optimal level without previous shrinkage processes of population, industrial and food production sizes. Problem: this could only be achieved with restrictions on freedom and authoritarian measures such as restricting the number of children or the consumption of raw materials. Solution/Meadows: The authors had a future world in mind in which people had covered their basic needs and left plenty of free time for them to take care of immaterial values such as education and research, the practice of music, religion and sport and the cultivation of social contacts (1). 1.
