Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten on Judgments - Dictionary of Arguments

Gadamer I 36
Judgement/"Urteilskraft"/Baumgarten/Gadamer: With Baumgarten, (...) it is quite clear that what the judgement recognizes is the sensual-individual, the individual thing, and what it judges in the individual thing is its perfection or imperfection(1).
Gadamer: Now in this definition of judgement one must bear in mind that here not a given concept of the thing is simply applied, but that the sensual-individual is grasped in itself,
Gadamer I 37
in that the agreement of many things to one is noticed in it. Here, therefore, the decisive factor is not the application of a general rule, but inner agreement. As can be seen, this is already what Kant later called "reflective judgement" and understood as judgement according to a real and formal expediency. No concept is given, but the individual is judged "immanently". >Judgement/"Urteilskraft"/Kant.
