Friedrich Schlegel on Critique - Dictionary of Arguments
Gadamer I 367 Critique/Schlegel/Gadamer: The 25th Lyceum Fragment by Friedrich Schlegel reads: "The two main principles of the so-called historical critique are the postulate of commonness and the axiom of ordinariness. Postulate of commonness: Everything quite great, good and beautiful is unlikely, for it is extraordinary and at least suspicious. Axiom of ordinariness: As it is with us and around us, so it must have been everywhere, because it is all so natural." Gadamer: In contrast to this, the consciousness of the history of effects rises above such naivety of matching and comparing by allowing tradition to become an experience and keeping itself open for the claim to truth that is encountered in it. The hermeneutic consciousness has its completion not in its methodical self-assurance but in the (...) readiness for experience (...). >Historical Consciousness/Gadamer, >Experience/Gadamer._____________Explanation of symbols: Roman numerals indicate the source, arabic numerals indicate the page number.
