Structures, philosophy: structures are properties of an object, a set, or a domain of objects which determine the constitution and possible formability of this object, this set, or this domain. The properties defining the structure may be derived from the objects, e.g. magnetic forces or electric charge or can be imprinted on the objects such as e.g. the mathematical operations of multiplication or addition. See also order, system, relations._____________Annotation: The above characterizations of concepts are neither definitions nor exhausting presentations of problems related to them. Humberto Maturana on Structures - Dictionary of Arguments
I 100 Definition structure/Maturana: a system defines the space in which it exists as a composite unit, which can be affected by interactions of its components. >Systems, cf. >Systems/Luhmann. But the structure does not determine its properties as a unit. An unknown system cannot only be specified or determined by its structure. I 101 Separate systems may have the same organization but different structure. Structure can change, while the organization remains. I 104 Structure/medium/Maturana: the structure of the medium produces the concrete historical sequence of influences, which select from the set of possible state sequences those that are realized. >Media, >Communication media/T. Parsons. I 162 Structure/Maturana: specifies in which structural configurations of a medium a composite unit can interact at all - without the organization getting lost. >Operation/Maturana._____________Explanation of symbols: Roman numerals indicate the source, arabic numerals indicate the page number.
