Johann Martin Chladenius on Meaning Change - Dictionary of Arguments
Gadamer I 187 Meaning Change/Chladenius/Gadamer: [Chladenius] finds that understanding an author completely is not the same as fully understanding a speech or writing (§ 86)(1). The norm for understanding a book is by no means the opinion of the author. "[B]ecause people cannot overlook everything, their words, speeches and writings can mean something that they themselves have not been willing to speak or write" and, consequently, "by seeking to understand their writings, one can, with reason, commemorate things that do not come to the mind of the author".(1) >Understanding/Chladenius, >Hermeneutics/Chladenius. 1. J.M.Chladenius, Einleitung zur richtigen Auslegung vernünftiger Reden und Schriften, 1742._____________Explanation of symbols: Roman numerals indicate the source, arabic numerals indicate the page number.
