Niccolo Machiavelli on Virtues - Dictionary of Arguments
Höffe I 197 Virtues/Machiavelli/Höffe: True to the tradition of Cicero, Thomas Aquinas and his humanist contemporaries, Machiavelli [lists] numerous praiseworthy qualities. In chapter 18 ((s) of the Prince) he bundles them into five character traits, in "mildness, loyalty, sincerity, humanity and piety". There are three things that matter: 1. The good qualities are actually required - with shameless cruelty one can achieve power but not fame. 2. One need not really possess the virtues, appearance is enough; as a master of hypocrisy and pretence the successful prince is able to entice people and win them over by acting mendacity. 3.
