Otfried Höffe on Kierkegaard - Dictionary of Arguments

Höffe I 343
Kierkegaard/Höffe: [Kierkegaard] (...) deals with dangers and difficulties that arise outside of politics, the world of economy, society, law and state. He, the founder of the newer existential philosophy, places the individual at the center of his thinking, who has the unjustifiable freedom to decide for him- or herself what kind of life he or she wants to lead. There is certainly a political message in this:
Responsibility/Kierkegaard: Neither a democracy based on the rule of law nor a tightly knit social safety net, even personal friends and a life partner do not relieve the burden of the highly personal responsibility demanded here. In a strict "either-or", as one of his works is titled, one has to choose between three

forms of life: the sensual, the ethical and the only perfect, the Christian existence. With this theme, Kierkegaard is a political thinker in the indirect form of a critique of a possible overestimation of the political, which amounts to its disempowerment:
Law, state and politics are not everything; perhaps they are not even the most important thing for humans.
