I 224 Epistemology/Gadamer: (...) through the incommensurability of thinking and being, the problem of knowledge had been posed in a new way. Dilthey: Dilthey saw this clearly and in his correspondence with the Yorck von Wartenburg there is already talk of the nominalistic background with which the epistemology in the 17th century was concerned and which has been brilliantly verified by the more recent research since Duhem.(1) >Epistemology/Dilthey. Gadamer: The problem of epistemology now gains a new topicality through the historical sciences. The history of words already teaches this, insofar as the word epistemology only originated in the epoch after Hegel. It came into use when empirical research had discredited the Hegelian system.
